When home automation systems have problems, the vast majority of the time it has something to do with the network. Issues such as latency problems, broadcast storms from devices like Sonos, and video buffering while streaming are just a few of the problems consumers like myself experience when using consumer grade network equipment.

I knew when designing my system with Masterpiece there were only two options, Cisco or Pakedge. While both are excellent choices, Pakedge is significantly more user friendly. To use Cisco, I would need to hire a network engineer to make the kind of configuration changes I would need to support the Quality of Service I was looking for. Also, with the recent merger between Control4 and Pakedge, I knew it was a solid choice.

Yes, Pakedge is a more significant investment than the many consumer based routers and switches, but if I am going to make a significant investment in a home automation system, I want it to work in a consistent and reliable manner. Therefore, in working with Masterpiece, we moved forward with Pakedge to be the backbone of my network and wireless. That decision in addition to Control4 was the best decisions I made as it relates to my home automation system. I have zero problems with my system and performance is incredible. Don’t try to save on the network by purchasing consumer based network equipment when building a home automation system, you will definitely regret that decision.
